NMLS announces June activities

1980s power ballads concert — Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Journey—whether you rocked out to their tunes in the 80s or are just discovering their music now, you can enjoy the songs of these 80s bands as the Nicholson Memorial Library System presents the Hair Ballad Allstars. Concert begins at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 9, at the Central Library, 625 Austin St., downtown Garland.

The Hair Ballad Allstars are an acoustic duet whose repertoire consists of songs from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, including tunes from Tom Petty, Poison, the Gin Blossoms and KISS. Audience will be encouraged to sing along at this performance.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, this event is part of the Adult Summer Reading Program. It is free and open to adults ages 18+. Registration is not required, but seating is limited. Doors open 30 minutes prior to show time. 972-205-2502.

40th anniversary of RockyCelebrate the fortieth anniversary of Rocky with a free screening of the film  at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 14 at the Central Library. Rocky is a classic sports film from 1976, starring Sylvester Stallone that tells the story of small-time boxer Rocky Balboa who gets the chance to fight heavyweight champion Apollo Creed.

Parental guidance is suggested, as some materials may not be suitable for children. Parents may consult www.IMDB.com or www.commonsensemedia.com to make an informed decision on whether Rocky is appropriate families. Doors open 15 minutes early. Seating limited, registration not required. Popcorn and water will be available while supplies last.

Adult coloring debuts — Adult coloring is one of the most popular trends today and is a great way to relax and de-stress.. Drop in to any one of the library’s four adult coloring programs and try it for yourself. The library provides all the supplies; you provide the creativity.

These events are open to adults ages 18+. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Children experience drive-in movie — Children and their families can have a “drive-in” movie experience at the Central Library, 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 18.

To emphasize the “drive-in” experience, attendees will decorate large cardboard boxes like cars, with paper plates for tires and steering wheels. The children will then sit in the boxes and watch the film Minions. Water and popcorn served while supplies last. Attendees may bring their own boxes to decorate or use those provided by the library. They may take their “cars” home.

Doors open 15 minutes early. Seating is limited. No registration is required. All ages may attend.
