Car crash ends in murder

Nov. 12, 2016

Saturday, November 11, at approximately 12:30 a.m., officers from the Garland Police Department responded to a general disturbance in the area of Centerville Road and Broadway Boulevard.  Responding officers were made aware that there were two vehicles involved in a crash and gunshots were being fired.

When officers arrived they observed a white Chrysler 300 stopped in the roadway and a male subject lying on the ground with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.  The male subject was pronounced dead at the scene.

Garland homicide detectives were called to investigate and determined that occupants from the white Chrysler were involved in a disturbance with occupants from a black passenger car.  The Chrysler was occupied by a driver and the victim.

It is believed that the vehicles were traveling eastbound on Centerville Road when the Chrysler crashed into a Dodge Challenger, disabling the Chrysler.  Unknown subjects exited the black passenger car, shot the victim and fled the location.  The occupants of the Challenger suffered minor injuries.

This is an ongoing investigation. The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Ismael Mendez Jr. of Dallas.

If anyone has information regarding the shooting they are encouraged to contact the Garland Police Department at 972-485-4840.

Tips may also be submitted anonymously to Garland Crime Stoppers at 972-272-8477 (TIPS), or www.garlandcrimestoppers.org.
