Apple recognizes two elementaries

Beaver and Watson Technology Centers for Math and Science offer an education unlike any other in Garland ISD. Access to innovative technology and a focus on math and science prepare students to be future leaders in emerging career fields.

Both campuses use Project-Based Learning to simulate the real world, with students working together to solve problems such as water conservation, cybersafety and sustainable goods and services.

“A recent PBL asked, ‘By learning about the past and present, how can first-graders predict the changes we will have in the future and make the world a better place?’” explained Beaver Principal Jason Adams. “One component was to create an invention that would do just that—make the world a better place. Apple devices allow us to really create a unique learning environment where students get to collaborate and create together every single day.”

That environment is attracting attention not just in GISD, but nationwide as well. Beaver and Watson recently received a three-year Apple Distinguished Program award. This title signifies innovation, leadership and educational excellence. The 2015-17 award marks the campuses’ third designation since 2012.

“Although the award is from Apple, what the teachers and students do with these tools every single day makes it special,” commented Adams. “I would like to thank them for their hard work, and also thank administration for its support.”
