City partnership launches weekend snack program

Jul. 22, 2015

The city of Garland, in partnership with Kraft-Heinz and the Garland Kiwanis, is addressing child hunger.

Snack goods donated by Kraft-Heinz will help address hunger among kids by providing weekend snacks at two Garland locations: Richland Apartments and Parkridge Community Apartments.

City employees who were instrumental in working between city departments, Kraft-Heinz and Kiwanis to make this possible include Bonny Patrick and Michelle Taylor in Water Utilities, and Senior Managing Director Priscilla Wilson.

The snack program supplements the city’s Summer Nutrition Program, which provides summer meals to children at 33 locations throughout the community. The city also has partnered with the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and the North Texas Food Bank to “Silence the Growl” and provide bags of food for weekend consumption by kids at home.

“We’re extremely pleased to partner with the Kiwanis and Kraft-Heinz, in addition to United Way, to provide healthy snacks to children,” said Wilson.

The snack packs contain a variety of food for kids to enjoy such as corn nuts, meat and cheese lunchables, juice, cereal, fruit snacks and other items, and will be provided through Aug. 7.
