District observes National School Lunch Week with festive foods

Garland ISD observed the 53rd National School Lunch Week with Texas State Fair-themed treats. Corn dogs, caramel applesauce and sausage on a stick all made appearances this week, offering students delicious, seasonal bites.

“National School Lunch Week provides an opportunity to highlight the benefits of our school lunches,” said GISD Assistant Director of Nutrition Menu Operations Jennifer Craig. “Our meals are all centered on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and milk. We decided to include themed food this week because it happened to be the week of GISD’s Fair Day. We also wanted to show that eating healthy can also be fun.”

Nine themed items were planned for the week—including one of the most famous fried state fair staples.

“I loved the funnel cakes, they were really good. I wish we had them more often,” said Lakeview Centennial High School freshman Alexia Rodriguez. “The pizza sticks were good too, but they were small, so I got two.”

Rodriguez was not the only one who was raving about the week’s menu options.

“We have been in schools all week and have really enjoyed seeing the kids’ smiling faces,” Craig said. “The funnel cake was definitely a big hit. It was baked and 51 percent whole grain, but still an excellent product. The roasted corn was very well-received, as well. It was my personal favorite.”
