Several important activities related to ongoing downtown redevelopment projects will impact vehicular and pedestrian traffic during the next few weeks.
Lyles/Tinsley house move
The Lyles/Tinsley house was tentatively scheduled to move to its new home in the southwest quadrant of Heritage Crossing Thursday, Feb. 26. However, weather conditions have delayed critical pre-move preparations. A new date will be announced as soon as possible.
When the move does occur, Fifth Street will be closed to through traffic between Walnut and Austin Streets. Access to the west library parking lot and Granville Arts Center parking lot will be restricted. The evening before the move, on-street parking along the move route will be blocked off and remain unavailable until the house passes by.
Intersection closure (see map link below)
Recent construction activities around City Hall require the adjacent portion of State Street to be re-paved, along with a small portion of Fifth Street. The intersection at State and Fifth Streets will be closed March 2 through mid-April. The adjacent sidewalks will also be closed, but pedestrians may detour via Main Street, Austin Street, or the alley south of the Duckworth Building. Handicap accessible parking will be available on Austin Street next to the Duckworth Building.
The Fifth Street closure will impact the DART bus stop in front of City Hall. Please check DART.org or contact DART directly for alternate stop locations.
Construction on Austin Street between the Granville Arts Center and the Oaks development will close the Austin Street driveway to the Granville for approximately two months. Patrons will need to enter from the Fifth Street entrance nearest the DART Light Rail station.
Downtown square
The city will fill in the pool area of the downtown square to make the center portion of the square more user-friendly. This project is necessary because the pool and fountain are no longer usable due to ongoing drought conditions. The project is expected to begin in early March and be complete by April 1.
The interior portion of the square will be fenced off during the project. The perimeter of the square and the front of the Civic Theatre building will be open to pedestrian traffic.
