Driver dies in hit & run crash

Aug. 1, 2016

On July 31 at approximately 3:30 a.m., officers from the Garland Police Department responded to the report of an accident where a subject had been run over in the 12500 block of East LBJ Freeway. When officers arrived they found a subject lying on the highway. The responding officers shut down the highway and notified traffic investigators.

Traffic investigators determined that a blue Honda passenger car, which was occupied by a driver and front passenger, was traveling eastbound on LBJ Freeway at Northwest Highway. For unknown reasons the Honda lost control which caused it to strike a guard rail on the right side shoulder of the highway. This collision disabled the Honda and it came to rest sideways with the front end of the vehicle on the right shoulder and rear end of the vehicle in the right hand lane of traffic.

A white Toyota passenger car which was traveling eastbound in the right lane then struck the passenger side of the Honda. As a result of the impact the driver of the Honda, who was still inside the vehicle, was ejected. The driver of the Honda landed in the main lanes of traffic on LBJ Freeway.

While the driver of the Honda was in the roadway he was struck by several vehicles that subsequently fled the location. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger in the Honda was transported to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Honda has been identified as 19-year-old Mario Flores of Dallas.

The investigation is ongoing. Garland Police Department investigators are asking anyone who has any information about the accident to call 972-485-4840.
