Enjoy new menu items, expanded hours at Generator

Jul. 12, 2016

Located on Garland’s historic downtown square at 107 North Sixth Street, the Generator Coffee House & Bakery is one of the area’s bright.est gems.

Housed in a beautifully renovated building with brick walls and wood floors, the Generator is not only known for its coffee, but also for its homemade desserts, lunch menu items and new Sunday brunch menu.

Nir Sela purchased the business in May and has made several popular changes. He has applied for a beer and wine license and the variance has already been approved by the City Council. The hours of operation have been expanded to include the Sunday brunch and the shop is now open for business on Mondays.generator

The Generator continues to feature live music by local musicians as well as the works of local artists.

Sela has already gotten to know many of the Generator’s customers as well as fellow downtown Garland business owners.

“It sounds cliché, but it feels like family here,” he said. “It’s very nice that all of the surrounding businesses are connected. Everyone helps each other.”

Originally from Israel, Sela spent several years in New York before moving to Texas to provide a better life for his 5-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter.

“I wanted my kids to know that trees existed not only in Central Park,” he said. “There’s more space here, more things for my kids to do. That’s the reason I moved here.”

generatorThey lived in Plano near Sela’s sister before moving to Garland but the family is established in the Garland community now. Sela said that he loves living in Garland and hopes one day to live in the downtown area.

The Generator was a perfect fit for the new owner as he loves coffee, has owned small coffee shops before and recently introduced his own blend. He’s happy with his decision to purchase the shop.

“For me it’s not a business,” Sela said. “It’s a place to come and relax and have fun and if I can make money along the way, then that’s a bonus.”

Sela said that he is the first one there in the morning and the last one to leave at night but it’s worth the long hours and hard work.

He is happy to be working with the other business owners to help make downtown as busy and vibrant as it can be.
