Garland recognizes new finance director

Aug. 5, 2016

The city of Garland is proud to announce the promotion of Matt Watson to finance director.

Watson began his career with the city of Garland in 2007 as a budget analyst and currently serves as budget services administrator in the city’s Budget and Research Department. As finance director, he will assume most of the responsibilities previously held by Managing Director David Schuler, who retired in May. As he transitions into his new role, Watson will continue to be involved in the development of budget and financial strategies, as well as work to enhance the level of synergy between the Finance and Budget departments.

City Manager Bryan Bradford expressed his support and excitement for Watson’s promotion.

“Those of you who have had the pleasure of working with Matt know that he is an exceptional professional and servant leader who will greatly benefit the city in his new role,” Bradford said. “I know you join me in congratulating Matt on this significant achievement.”

Watson has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Texas Tech University, is a certified public accountant and is certified as a Government Finance Officer. He and his wife, Jamie, have two children, Alice and Elijah, and are expecting their third child, Nora, in late August.

Watson will begin his duties as finance director Aug. 1.
