City welcomes new Parks, Rec, Cultural Arts leader

Nov. 24, 2015

The city of Garland welcomes new leadership for the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts, naming Jermel Stevenson as managing director over those departments.

He brings more than 20 years of experience in managing municipal parks and recreation systems in north Texas, Phoenix and Detroit. He has developed innovative approaches to program and facilities management, special events, and human capital management that have earned national recognition for his programs.

Stevenson embraces national best practices standards and accreditation processes to grow and develop programs and services, as well as the city employees who will deliver them. As president/secretary of the Dallas/Fort Worth Parks and Recreation Director’s Association, he has focused on the economic impact of recreational resources, and how to manage such resources during extreme events such as drought.

“We are proud of the outstanding parks, recreation and cultural arts programs Garland has,” said City Manager Bryan L. Bradford. “We look forward to benefiting from Stevenson’s experience and providing our residents and visitors with even greater opportunities.”

Stevenson will begin his duties in Garland Nov. 30.
