GHS grad pursues music career

Jun. 23, 2015

Singer/songwriter Ashley White, who graduated from Garland High School in 2011, said that she has always known that she wanted a career in music.

“Other kids wanted to be astronauts and I never dreamed of anything less than being Hilary Duff,” she said. “Thankfully, though, my music taste and role models grew up as I did.”

Musical talent runs in her family and Ashley said that she remembers waking up to the sound of her grandmother playing piano and she never wanted to get out of bed because she didn’t want the music to end.

Music is language to Ashley and she feels that it connects rooms full of people on a deep level. She added that music has always “understood her and found her.” She also described music as being “home to her.”

“It is the one thing shared between Heaven and Earth and that’s why it is as powerful as it is,” she said. “Music speaks for us when we can’t speak for ourselves because everything about it is Heavenly.”

Many of the songs that the songwriter has penned are spiritual in nature and Ashley added that she cannot get God out of her songs. She cited her philosophy as “It is no longer I, but Christ who lives in me.” Galatians 2:2.

“My life is Christ, so every song is Christ,” Ashley said.

Every song doesn’t’ specifically mention His name, but it is difficult for her to write a song without mentioning Him because she is, above everything else, a worship leader.

Every songwriter has a different process and Ashley’s songs come to her in bits and pieces and recently she has been hearing songs in her dreams.

“Lyrics have come first a lot lately, but now I’m getting a lot more melodies and musical ideas in my head,” Ashley said. “I’m obviously still growing in this area and there’s not much of a formula for me yet.”

Formula or not, her creations are expressive and beautiful because she has both songwriting skills and vocal talent.

Her shows also include an interesting array of covers including Carol King and Elvis Presley.

Ashley said that the curse of being creative is that you never believe that your creativity is good enough. But according to the folks who attended her recent shows in downtown Garland, she need not worry about that.
