Help Habitat build hope for deserving families

Nov. 7, 2016

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Garland will be working at 509 Nona Street through the 2016 holiday season and they need the community’s help. This home is one of the Garland ISD Building Trades homes and students from Naaman Forest, North Garland and Garland high schools have worked on it.

The Gibbons family, Eddie, Stephanie and their three children: Akia (18), Chantel (13), and Amar (11), is working hard to be ready for the 509 Nona Street Habitat home. After her recovery from a serious illness, Stephanie, along with her husband Eddie, decided to look into the possibility of being approved for a Habitat home.

When they received their acceptance letter, Stephanie said that she felt like a weight had been lifted. Eddie agreed saying “It’s a great thing!” Their children look forward to having rooms they can make their own and Chantel looks forward to having “a sense of belonging – home is where the heart is.”

Having a Habitat home will improve the quality of their lives in several ways. Their current home has plumbing and electrical issues, it is not well insulated and drafty in the winter and there is mold in the home.

Habitat has a hand-up, not hand-out philosophy and the Gibbons will contribute 350 sweat equity hours toward their home, complete homeowner education and will be required to repay a low or no interest mortgage.

Eddie said that he has enjoyed working with Habitat and doing a variety tasks on the home and helping in the ReStore. Stephanie has enjoyed helping in the ReStore and meeting people from all walks of life. The message they have for everyone at Garland Habitat is “Thanks, thanks, thanks, you have made a dream a reality! Bless you.”

The house is framed and roofed with rough electrical wiring installed. The detached garage needs to be built and the home must be completed.

Below is a list of HFHGG needs required to finish this home. Any donation big or small will be a blessing. To help the organization build hope, go to http://www.garlandhabitat.org/giving-options/
