Update Jan. 20

The Garland Police Department has identified the man who was shot on Jan. 15, in the 900 block of Green Pond, as Stephen Wray Smith II of Allen.

Shortly after 12:30 a.m. Jan 15, the Garland Police Department responded to a report of a man shot in the 900 block of Green Pond. When officers arrived, they observed a 47- year-old man lying dead on the ground outside of the residence.

The deceased had been at the home earlier and he and the homeowner had fought. The male subject left, but the homeowner received a message from an outside party that the subject was returning, possibly to hurt him.

The homeowner, who has cameras around his home, noticed that one camera had stopped working. He retrieved a pistol and went outside to investigate.

Once outside, he was confronted by the 47-year-old man. The homeowner said that he feared for his life, believing that the man had a weapon, and shot the subject in self-defense. The male subject died at the scene.

Detectives were notified and the investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made at this time and the homeowner will go before a grand jury.

No weapons other than the homeowner’s gun have been found. Later investigations did reveal that one of the camera wires had been cut.

The name of the 47-year-old man will not be released until notification of next of kin.
