Football playoffs: RHS advances; GHS, SHS seasons end

The first week of the high school football playoffs ended with RHS moving forward to the next round and the elimination of SHS and GHS.

Eagles continue to area round

The Rowlett Eagles got a win in the bi-district round of the playoffs against Belton High School Friday, Nov. 13. The high scoring game ended at 65-Eagles and 64-Belton HS.

The Eagles were ahead 37-30 at the end of the first half and the lead went back and forth between the two teams several times in the second half. Behind 64-51 in the fourth with just over seven minutes left, RHS scored on a 3-yard pass from Logan Bonner to Quinton Stinson to bring the score to 64-58.

About five minutes later, Bonner got a TD on an 8-yard run which put the Eagles on top 65-64. The Rowlett defense held Belton’s offense for the last couple minutes to ensure the victory.

Bonner also scored in the first on a 2-yard run.

LaDarius Dickens scored for the Eagles in the first and second quarters on a 7-yard rush and a 26-yard pass reception from Bonner.

Kobe Morrow got three TDs, two came on 1-yard runs in the second and third quarters and another was the result of a 74-yard run. Josh Lewis caught a 12-yard Bonner pass for a score in the second.

Alvin Kenworthy and Chris Luplow added eight in PATs and Kenworthy hit a 23-yard field goal.

The Eagles got more than 600 total yards on the game, which were divided fairly evenly between rushing and passing.

Bonner completed 27 passes for 341 yards and Stinson caught six throws for 100 yards on the game. Morrow collected 281 rushing yards in 23 carries.

The Eagles will meet Skyline HS in the area round of the playoffs Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at Mesquite’s Memorial Stadium.

Mustangs’ season ends

The Sachse Mustangs’ football season came to an end in a 10-7 loss to Killeen Shoemaker Friday, Nov. 13. In an unusually low-scoring game for Sachse, the defense got their only score on a 62-yard interception return by Riko Jeffers in the first quarter.

Quarterback Jalen Mayden ended the night at 18-32 with 147 yards. Devin Duvernay was held to 55 yards in nine carries.

Owls’ season over

The Garland Owls lost to Waco Midway High School 41-20 in Waco Friday, Nov. 13. The Owls’ first two scores came on 24- and 30-yard Hunter Merriman field goals.

Coree Compton scored on a 76-yard Jacoby Williams pass in the second and Josh Thompson got a TD on a 76-yard interception return. Merriman was good on both PATs. Williams ended the night at 12-35 with 155 yards. Compton had four catches for 96 yards.
