HS football recap: Sept. 2-4

Two Garland ISD high school football teams participated in a new tradition at the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium this Labor Day weekend. The Lakeview Centennial Patriots and the Rowlett Eagles, along with six other area teams helped kick off the Cotton Bowl Stadium Prep Showcase Saturday, Sept. 3. Both GISD teams came away with wins.

LCHS came from behind, scoring two unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter, to get a 34-27 victory over North Mesquite High School.

The Patriots’ quarterback Kamron Fields was 22-32 with an impressive 302 passing yards and four TDs. He also rushed 13 times for 113 yards and one score.

Shamond Greenwood caught six of Fields’ passes for 134 yards and three touchdowns. Calen Mayfield had five catches for 11 yards each and a touchdown. Te’Darius Herford collected 107 yards on the ground.

David Garza was good on four point after attempts.

Eagles defeat Rockwall HS

The Rowlett Eagles also drew attention to Garland ISD in the Cotton Bowl Stadium Prep Showcase Saturday by defeating Rockwall High School. The final score was 34-32.

Preston Weeks and Garret Hermes shared quarterback duties and combined for 158 lchs-northmesquite-slideshowyards in the air. One of the Weeks passes resulted in a 32-yard TD throw to Cameron Vitosh in the second quarter. Weeks also scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter.

Kobe Morrow took the ball in on a 1-yard TD rush in the first quarter. In the third quarter, Jake Davis returned a Rockwall kickoff 97 yards for a score.

Kicker Josh Aldana added four PATs, a 25-yard field goal in the first and the game winning 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Morrow carried the ball 20 times for 83 yards. Hermes had six carries for 40 yards. LaDarius Dickens caught seven passes for 69 yards.sept

SHS gets victory over Plano West

Quarterback Jalen Mayden and the Sachse Mustangs got a 33-19 victory over Plano West High School Thursday, Sept. 1, at Garland’s Williams Stadium.

In a little less than three quarters, Mayden put together 308 passing yards and four TDs. Nate Shelton caught two of the touchdown passes, the first for 68 yards in the first quarter and the second in the second quarter for 71 yards.

DeAndre Kennedy caught a 9-yard pass for an additional score and Drue Jackson also got a TD on a 20-yard Mayden pass. Kelon Wilson added a rushing TD in the second quarter.

Peyton Reyes added three PATs.

Coach Mark “Red” Behrens feerhs-rockwall-slideshow2ls good about the progress of his defense.

“We have several new starters on defense and they are getting better every week,” he said. “They held Plano West at just 200 yards total offense while getting valuable experience.”

Owls defeated by Mesquite HS

The Owls were defeated by Mesquite HS at Hanby Stadium Friday, Sept. 2. The final score was 41-34. Kicker Joshua Chavez started the scoring for the Owls in the first quarter with a 32-yard field goal. He added a 31-yard field goal in the second.

Donovan Benzenhafer scored on a 3-yard run in the second. Josh Thompson caught a 44-, 68- and 4-yard passes from Joshua Brown for TDs in the fourth quarter.

Brown finished the game at 8-17 with 247 yards. ghs-mesquite-slideshowThompson collected 182 yards on six carries.

Berkner HS defeats Naaman Forest HS

The Naaman Forest Rangers were defeated by Richardson Berkner High School Friday, Sept. 2, at Garland’s Williams Stadium. The score was 21-15.

Is’aiah Coffer-Jones scored twice for the Rangers on 14- and 4-yard runs in the first and second quarters. In the third, kicker Kevin Hernandez hit a 26-yard field goal.

 

South Garland Colonels fall to Woodrow Wilson HS

South Garland High School was defeated by Woodrow Wilson HS Friday, Sept. 2, by a score of 61-20.

After falling behind by three scores in the first quarter, the Colonels were able to get TDs in the second, third and fourth quarters, but it would not be enough to close the gap.

Jaylin Sidney scored on a 1-yard run in the first. Jaylon Turner caught a 24-yard pass from quarterback Caled Dabney pass. Turner also scored on a 10 yard run.

Jaime Lopez added two PATs.

Dabney was 12-21 with 131 yards. Sidney carried the ball 22 times for 88 yards.

NGHS falls to Royse City HS

The North Garland Raiders were defeated by Royse City High School Friday, Sept. 2, by a final score of 13-3.

They scored on a 25-yard field goal by Jose Gutierrez.
