Letter to the editor: Ruler of the universe

May. 23, 2016

God is the Lord and Ruler of the physical realm. What God creates He controls. This wonderfully-made universe with its intricate physical laws came into being by a wise, eternal God:  Psalm 33:6, “By the word of the LORD were made…”; Psalm 33:9, “For he spoke, and it came to be…” As Ruler and Creator of the universe, the laws of nature are subject to His absolute control and purpose. The physical realm is under the power and authority of God which requires that they are subject to His rules. God can choose to act in any way He pleases as the sovereign creator:  Psalm 115:3, “Our God is in the heavens; He does all He pleases.” Check these biblical references for confirmation:

Sea and Sky

Psalm 135:6-7, “Whatever the LORD pleases He does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all depths. He is the one who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth, who makes lightnings for the rain and brings forth the wind from His storehouses.” He is Author and Regulator of nature!

Stars

Psalm 147:4, “He determines the number of the stars; He gives to all of them their names.” His power and wisdom are unlimited. He is the Omnipotent and Omniscient Creator!

Saints and Sinners

Matthew 5:45, “For He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” There is a benevolent concern on the part of God for the righteous as well as the unjust. These material benefits convey the indisputable evidence of His compassion to humanity through creation.

Earth

Genesis 8:22, “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night, shall not cease.” Jeremiah 5:24, “Let us fear the LORD our God who gives the rain in its season, the autumn rain and the spring rain, and keeps for us the weeks appointed for the harvest.” (NKJV). These passages indicate that God promised to maintain the stability of nature within the designed purposes of its creation.

Man-made devices

The Book of Daniel describes the ultimate power of God over the physical laws of nature. It states in 3:17, “If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king.” Remember, what God creates He controls and nothing exists without His permission nor independently from His wisdom. Even man-made devices like a furnace, cannot prevent His providence and power. These three believers in Daniel 3:27 were threatened with being burned to death, but were protected by God, “The hair of their heads was not singed, their cloaks were not harmed, and no smell of fire had come upon them.” Praise the LORD! Even man-made devices cannot hinder the power of the Almighty to miraculously act as He desires.

So many wonderful passages and great things can be shared about God’s work of creation. He is the Designer, Ruler and Preserver of all things. He possesses all divine perfections, and unto Him alone, all creatures owe Him the highest reverence, obedience and confidence. If someone denies this biblical view of creation, then these essential questions remain: Who can create a universe out of nothing? Who determined the natural laws of physics that organize and sustain that creation? Who can supersede these natural laws and miraculously act according to His desire and determination?
