Local, national experts to collaborate on East End redevelopment

Mar. 25, 2015

On March 27, City of Garland officials will welcome a team of national experts in architecture and urban design for a three-day public workshop on redevelopment in the East End neighborhood.

The process, known as a “charrette,” will combine community perspectives with design expertise to build a vision and plan for redeveloping the East End. City employees and local stakeholders will join experts from leading national firm Van Meter Williams Pollack LLP, and local firms VERDUNITY and ASH+LIME Strategies. The arrival of national neighborhood revitalization experts will bolster the City of Garland’s work on the East End, which has been a major target for redevelopment in recent years.

The event is one of three Legacy Charrettes organized by the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) and its local members in anticipation of the CNU national Congress scheduled for April 29-May 2 in Dallas. By providing pro bono expertise of nationally recognized leaders in high-quality, walkable community development, CNU hopes to leave a legacy in the Dallas region that will have positive impacts well after the Congress is over.

This weekend’s schedule begins Friday, March 26 at 6:00 p.m. with an open house kick-off event at the host site: the Hyatt Place Hotel, 5101 N President George Bush Highway. All day on Saturday, open-door sessions will invite community members to share their vision for Garland and develop a plan for alternative development. A second open house on Saturday night will display the findings and illustrations that result.

On Sunday, a culminating open reception at 1:30 p.m. in Dallas’ Nasher Sculpture Center will invite locals from Garland and three other Legacy Charrette communities to explore the resulting maps, plans, and illustrations. Representatives from each project will discuss how the community’s vision translated into real recommendations and strategies for moving forward.

Full reviews of the Legacy Charrettes will also be held during the 23rd annual CNU Congress, which convenes 1500+ leaders in architecture, design, planning, and development. Registration for the Congress is open. One-day passes and à la carte workshop registrations are available. For more information, visit cnu23.org.
