NMLS offers summer activities

The Nicholson Memorial Library System will offer exciting activities in July. Branch locations are: Central Library, 625 Austin St. in downtown Garland; Walnut Creek Branch, 3319 Edgewood Drive; South Garland Branch, 4845 Broadway Blvd.; North Garland Branch, 3845 N. Garland Avenue.

Rose-Mary Rumbley at Senior Social Hour – Rose-Mary Rumbley will speak at Senior Social Hour at 2 p.m., July 21, at the Central Library. Rumbley, author and former head of DBU’s drama department, has performed with Dallas Summer Musicals and Casa Mañana. She will present a selection of stories about U.S. presidents. Free, open to anyone 55+. Donations of gently used books and media will be accepted. Registration not required. Seats fill up quickly.

Kids experiment with abstract art – Children can experiment with abstract art through an activity called Art Dice at Art Explorers for ages 6-12. The event is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 2, at the Walnut Creek Branch. Children learn about different types of art and create masterpieces. Registration required. Tweens use geometry in art – Tween Scene is for ages 10-13. Attendees will learn about the tessellation art of M.C. Escher and its relationship to geometry then make their own tessellations with pre-made patterns or their own designs. The first is at 6:30 p.m. July 7, at the South Garland Branch. Second is at 4 p.m. July 14, at the North Garland Branch. 972-205-3933.

Patsy Cline tribute artist performs – Relive the magic of Patsy Cline at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 28, at Central Library. Sherrill Douglas is known as the “Voice of Many Faces” and performs tributes to Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Stevie Nicks and Patsy Cline. Event is free and open to ages 18+ Registration not required. Block party program – Children test building skills while having fun. 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, at Central Library. Block Party is free for ages 6-12. Library provides supplies. 972-205-2516.

Adults learn Origami – Adults can learn the Japanese art of paper folding at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at the Walnut Creek Branch. Library provides supplies. Registration required. 972-205-2587.

Kids play board games – Kids will enjoy the Afternoon Board Game event – 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. July 12 at the Central Library. Program is drop-in event, where children, ages 6-12, play various types of games. 972-205-2516.

Family movie times – Bring a blanket and enjoy a free movie. The first, Space Jam, is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at North Garland Branch.
