Police make arrest in break-in, sexual assault

Garland police responded to a report of a break-in and sexual assault in the 3400 block of Valley View Lane April 7 at around 5 p.m. Officers contacted a female victim who stated that a man, known to her as Gerald, knocked on her front door and when she opened it, he forced his way inside.

The man began physically assaulting her and then raped her. At one point during the assault, the victim was able to escape and call for help.  The victim gave officers the name Gerald and a description of her attacker. She was transported to a Dallas area hospital where she was admitted and treated for her injuries.

Officers began searching the area and located a man fitting the description in the 3200 block of Oak Hill Drive. Officers identified him as 30-year-old Gerald Hughes and took him into custody for the break-in and assault.  Hughes is in the Dallas County Jail and has been charged with Burglary of a Habitation with the Intent to Commit Sexual Assault.  Bond is set at $100,000.
