Scavenge Rowlett to help residents rebuilt

May. 11, 2016

The December tornado left a long-term effect on Rowlett and other affected areas. Fundraising cannot stop until all residents are back in their homes where they belong.

Scavenge Rowlett is an exciting city-wide scavenger hunt that will get participants outside and get them active. Additionally, it provides an awesome way to help friends and neighbors that were affected by the December 26 tornado.

The event date is June 11, 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. The event headquarters and starting point will be the First United Methodist Church located at 4405 Main Street in Rowlett.

It’s a scavenger hunt played on foot with a mobile app. Missions appear on the smartphone app that provide clues as to what players are to do to satisfy the requirements of the mission, usually ending with a photo. Missions may involve hugging a fire hydrant, finding a police officer and getting him to take a photo with you or solving a difficult puzzle only to find that you just need to send a picture of your left hand.

Scavenge Rowlett is the next in a series of fundraisers by Steve Walker of the nonprofit corporation Rowlett Strong, Inc. The previous fundraiser was the successful Rebuild Rowlett 5K.

The scavenge events are intended to be a series that will occur quarterly or semi-annually in Rowlett, Garland, Wylie and other areas most affected by recent storms. Other nearby areas will also get scavenge events so they can help their neighbors rebuild from the devastation.

The mobile app to be used was developed by a McKinney company to help with the hunts. The company is called Munzee (a very popular mobile game) and the scavenger hunt app is called EventZee.

After expenses, all proceeds from Scavenge Rowlett go to the Rebuild Rowlett long-term recovery fund, operated by the Rowlett Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Tickets are available at scavengerowlett.eventbrite.com. The event website is www.scavengentx.com.

Please help spread the word about this event. The folks affected by the tornado still need the community’s help.
