Symphonic safari not to be missed

Garland Symphony Orchestra continues its 2016-2017 Season, “Symphony Goes Wild!” Dec. 16. The performance is at 8 p.m. at the Granville Arts Center, 300 North Fifth Street in downtown Garland.

The concert will feature sopranos Christina Pecce and Anna Laurenzo performing a variety of songs including Bach’s “Sheep May Safely Graze,” Bach/Gounod’s “Ave Maria,” and Rossini’s “Cat Duet.”

Praised for her “astounding vocal expressivity” and “soaring full voice,” American soprano Christina Pecce is a singing actress who crosses over the genres of opera, musical theatre, jazz and performance art. She currently serves as a Hattie Mae Lesley Apprentice Artist for the Fort Worth Opera’s 2016-17 season and will be performing the roles of Frasquita in Carmen and Mother’s Ghost in the world premiere of Voir Dire by composer Matthew Peterson.

Praised for her “lovely tone” by the Capital Times, mezzo soprano Anna Laurenzo looks ahead to an exciting 2016/17 season. Her upcoming engagements include a return to the Fort Worth Opera where she will perform Mercédès (Carmen) and will appear in concerts across North Texas. Highlights of last season included debuts with Performance Santa Fe, the Fort Worth Opera and Central City Opera. Additionally, Laurenzo was a District Encouragement Award winner in the Metropolitan Operlaurenzoa National Council Auditions and competed as a 2016 semi-finalist in the Opera Birmingham Competition.

Garland Symphony Orchestra credits its music director, Robert Carter Austin, for its continued outstanding and diverse orchestral programming. Austin’s background encompasses over 30 years of professional music experience and includes degrees from MIT, Cambridge University and Stanford University. His musical experience includes conducting performances in countries including: Korea, Ukraine, Canada, Italy, Spain, China, France, Germany, Mexico, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Colombia, Philippines, Guatemala, Dominican Republic and the United States.
