The Garland Heritage Celebration will have entertainment, food and activities for all ages on Friday and Saturday, April 22-23. For history buffs, the Celebration will provide a wealth of historic tours in also Downtown Garland.
As part of the Bankhead Highway vintage automobile show on Friday, guided tours of the Downtown business area will begin at 12:30 p.m. and at the bottom of each hour through 4:30 p.m. These tours will include stories behind original businesses and buildings in Downtown Garland and perspective about what has changed during the last 125 years. Meet at the Downtown Square to participate in these tours.
On Saturday, the Landmark Museum will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Landmark Museum is housed in the 1901 Santa Fe Depot located in Heritage Crossing at Sixth and Walnut streets. The Museum will have a special display commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Bankhead Highway.
Also on Saturday, five vintage homes in Garland’s Travis College Hill Addition will be open for viewing from noon to 5 p.m. The historic district is located on South 11th Street between Avenues B and D.
Travis College Hill, originally platted in 1913, has received a Texas Historical Marker for its significance in the history of Garland and the State of Texas. At the time the area was platted, 11th Street was known as Garland Avenue (before the name was given to another thoroughfare).
The homes on tour were built in the early days of the last century. They include Garland’s Historic Pace House, formerly a City of Garland event center. It was moved from behind city hall and onto South 11th Street in late 2014. The Queen Anne-inspired home has been refurbished and has returned to residential usage.
Besides the Pace House, the other dwellings open to the public on the free tour are:
- 400 S. 11th St. (1918)-Greg and Becky Baxter
- 301 S. 11th St. (1915)-Dale and Hillary Adams
- 313 S. 11th St. (1913)-Louis and Kay Moore
- 401 S. 11th St. (1913)-KLMK Properties Inc.
The latter four are bungalow style with strong Craftsman influences.
These tours are just a few of the activities woven into this year’s Garland Heritage Celebration.
The event also will feature two birthday parties to mark the City’s 125th birthday!
