The Nicholson Memorial Library System has announced its schedule of activities for children and adults for January.
Kids participate in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” activities – Children ages 6-12 can participate in activities related to the popular Diary of a Wimpy Kids book series at Books and Beyond. Event is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 at Central Library. Books and Beyond consists of book discussions and activities related to themes. Each theme incorporates concepts from STEAM learning: science, technology, engineering, art and math. Attendees can take part in four “Wimpy Kid” activities: creating comics, playing “Rowley Toss” by tossing beanbags into a cutout of Rowley, making Greg masks and playing a “Wimpy Kid” matching game. 972-205-2516.
Adults make embroidery hoop wall organizers – Adults can make embroidery hoop wall organizers using embroidery hoops, fabric and cork sheets at adult craft workshop. Workshop is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at South Garland Branch. Each workshop features a unique craft project or art piece. Supplies provided by library. Registration required and limited to 24. Hear harpist Sonja Westberg – Seniors can enjoy harp and flute music played by Sonja Westberg at Senior Social Hour program at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17 at Central Library. Westberg currently holds Principal Harp position with Odysseus North Texas Chamber Orchestra and has performed with El Paso Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic and Santa Fe Symphony. Sponsored by Friends of the Library, these programs are free and open to anyone 55+. Donations of gently-used books and media for book sale will be accepted. No registration required. Best Brain Forward!—family trivia night – Families can take part in Best Brain Forward!, a trivia night designed for families and younger audiences at South Garland Branch Thursday, Jan. 3, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sign up in teams of three to four beginning Thursday, Dec. 20. Each team member must be 10 or older. Categories for trivia questions are U.S. and World History, Books, Anime and Pop Culture. Each team will write down their answers on a tally sheet. Children make dragons at Pete’s Dragon screening – Children can enjoy free screening of Pete’s Dragon (PG) at South Garland Branch Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. Pete’s Dragon relates the adventures of an orphan boy named Pete and his dragon friend Elliot. Kids create 3-D pets – Children 6-12 can create 3-D pets, inspired by Laurel Burch’s Fantastic Felines, at Art Explorers at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Walnut Creek Branch. Children attending learn about types of art, then develop their STEAM art skills by creating masterpieces. Registration required and limited to 24 participants.
