The Garland Landmark Museum, located at Heritage Crossing, 393 North Sixth Street, is open and ready for visitors to stop in and see the recent renovations and new exhibits. Come in Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Happening now – Garland Power & Light is celebrating its 100th year of service to the Garland community. They will celebrate with an activity-filled party at Winters Park, 3737 North Garland Avenue, Saturday, April 15. There will be live music, children’s activities, food trucks, power line work demonstrations and more.
To coincide with the anniversary, GP&L history exhibits will be on display at the following locations:
- Duckworth Building – March 31 to April 28
- Foundry Church – May 1 to May 30
- Landmark Museum – June 1 to July 1
- Duckworth Building – July 3 to Sept. 1
May 1 – Sept. 2 everyone will get a chance to “explore Garland in the space history” at the Garland and Beyond Space exhibit. Artifacts and exhibits on loan from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston will be included.
The space exhibit will be at Garland’s City Hall, 200 North Fifth Street in downtown Garland. See the exhibit during the following hours:
- Monday and Tuesday – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Wednesday, Thursday and Friday – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Saturday – 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Kim Nurmi, Heritage Crossing Coordinator, is excited to have the exhibit in Garland.
“Working with NASA’s Johnson Space Center to tell the history of manned space flight and Garland’s role in the history has been such an honor for the museum,” she said.
In addition, a variety of entertaining space-related activities have been planned to coincide with the exhibit.
Space-themed movies will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre, 521 West State Street in Downtown Garland on the following dates.
- “First Man” – Wednesday, May 3
- “The Right Stuff” – Thursday, May 18
- “Apollo 13” – Wednesday, June 7
Additional space movies will be shown on Sundays in June at 10 a.m. at the Foundry Church at 525 West Avenue A.
In addition, special “Space Date Nights” will be hosted in downtown Garland. The dates begin at City Hall where couples will pick up their mission patches before each date. There will be a different patch for each date night, so be sure and attend all four! The dates are below.
- May 12 – get your patch at the exhibit for a BOGO FREE special space beer at Intrinsic Smokehouse & Brewery and grab dinner while you’re there. Then head to the Band Together Concert Series for a FREE t-shirt and some great live music.
- June 10 – Get your patch at City Hall and wear it to the Art Lounge for a FREE space-themed art class. Then stop by Intrinsic Smokehouse & Brewery for a BOGO free special space beer.
- July 14 – Go to City Hall for your patch, then go to Infinity Arcade Restaurant and Bar for dinner and a night of galactic battles. Cover is FREE if you wear your patch. Then take advantage of the BOGO FREE space beer offer at Intrinsic Smokehouse & Brewery.
- 12 – Get your patch at the exhibit then wear it to Into the Well for a FREE space themed couples yoga class. After the yoga class, stop by Intrinsic Smokehouse & Brewery to cool down with their special BOGO FREE space beer offer.

Last, but not least, there will be a limited edition “TANG” summer beer available at Intrinsic Brewery and Smokehouse at 509 West State Street.
Opening July 7, the “Garland Health and Hospitals” exhibit will be a great opportunity to learn about Garland’s history in medicine. The exhibit will be at the Landmark Museum, 393 North Sixth Street in downtown Garland.
“We are very excited to tell Garland’s heath and hospital history from the beginning to today,” Nurmi said. “Health resources are crucial to any successful community, from doctors and pharmacies to clinics and hospitals.”
An ongoing museum sponsored activity is the Garland History GeoTour. Geocaching is an outdoor adventure using GPS technology for a modern-day treasure hunt.
