Members of Altrusa of Garland, Inc. had a busy service year. The organization members donated more than 13,000 service hours from June 2014 through May 2015 and they accomplished an impressive list of tasks.
They gave $3,500 in scholarships to Garland ISD high school graduates and their FROG reading program had 1,840 participants who read 80,139 books.
Altrusa also provided one-on-one STARR tutoring to at risk students at Daugherty and Heather Glen Elementary Schools.
Additionally, the service group gave $3,700 to Heifer International for overseas programs and sent 62 boxes, which equaled 776 pounds, to U. S. soldiers. For those who would like to participate in sending goodie boxes to soldiers, a list of needed items is below.

- Soap, body washes, deodorant, baby wipes
- Toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, shave gels
- Shampoo, conditioner, hair gel, mousse
- Body spray, lotion, sun block, feminine products
- Plain white socks for men and women
- Writing tablets, pens, card games, stress balls, crossword puzzles, stuffed toys for the kids
- Flashlights, AA and AAA batteries
- Microwave – popcorn, soups, noodles
- Gum, chips, cookies, trail mix, hard candy, nuts
- Granola bars, sunflower seeds, jerky, dried fruit, protein bars, pudding, Little Debbie Snacks
- Freeze pops, energy drinks, drink packs to flavor water (Crystal Light, Kool-Aid, etc.)
