More than 40 volunteers supported National Women Build Week with Garland Area Habitat for Humanity Saturday May 2. The volunteers worked on a Habitat home on Sundown Lane in Garland.
NWBW is sponsored annually by Lowe’s and challenges women from all walks of life to help eliminate poverty housing. Each May, during the days leading up to Mother’s Day, thousands of women volunteers join in Women Build days at Habitat affiliates. In the U.S. more than 70 percent of Habitat’s homes are built with women heads-of-household.
Volunteers from Lowe’s of Mesquite, Dallas Stars Ice Girls, Leadership Garland and Senior Girl Scout Troop 2689 were among those who gave their time to help paint the Habitat house in Garland.
Of the 42 volunteers, more than half were women. It wasn’t all work and no play though. Lowe’s volunteer coordinator Dana Walker held a hard hat decorating contest for her employee volunteers with Dallas Star Ice Girls serving as contest judges. The winner received a hard hat full of chocolates.
“We were so grateful for the support from Lowe’s and from all the wonderful volunteers who came to help us today,” Beth Leos of Garland Habitat said.
