Habitat helps low-income families become homeowners

Feb. 7, 2015

The spirit of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Garland is in its title: It strives to provide a humane standard of living for low-income families in the Garland area. It does this in a practical way by meeting the basic need of shelter.

“Every human being deserves a safe, decent place to live and grow,” said Beth Ellermeier-Leos, director of development. She and many others work together at Habitat for Humanity to get families up on their feet again. A roof over someone’s head can mean security, peace and hope for the future.

Since 1993, Habitat has been selling affordable homes at no profit to those who qualify. Among other criteria, the organization looks at applicants’ credit scores and generally helps those within the 30–50 percentile of median income range. These are the people whom Habitat workers believe can be best helped by their services.

Clients learn how to budget, maintain their homes and be responsible stewards of their possessions. They are not merely given an inexpensive home, although the low cost is a big part of what makes the mission possible. Habitat for Humanity also has each client participate in the construction of his own home, in order to help him appreciate and better preserve the building. As time passes, the house increases in value and becomes a financial asset to its owner.

Habitat for Humanity is very involved in Garland and its surrounding communities and can always use helping hands to further the mission. One easy way to help is to visit the ReStore where donated household items are sold to benefit Habitat’s cause. Donations to the ReStore are appreciated, as are any other financial or material gifts.

In addition, spending time to serve as a volunteer can mean a world of difference in someone’s life. Workers are always needed at the construction sites and no experience or tools are necessary. Simply dress accordingly and be ready to follow instructions and you can take part in building the foundation for someone’s future.

Volunteer opportunities are also available at the ReStore, where you can simply pitch in wherever you are needed, whether that is polishing furniture or greeting customers with a smile. You can aid in one of Habitat for Humanity’s events as well, such as a golf tournament or pancake breakfast. Spread the good news about the impact Habitat is having on the community, and gather up a few friends to come serve with you.

The possibilities for supporting Habitat for Humanity are nearly endless. The organization can use anything from free advertising to volunteers with skill in laying tile. Perhaps the most important thing you can do, however, is pray that the love of Christ will be spread through their mission: Building Hope One House at a Time.
