A Galaxy Called Dallas celebrates first anniversary

Aug. 8, 2015

The latest addition to pop culture in Garland is celebrating one year in business. A Galaxy Called Dallas, owned by James Pickering and his daughter Lilly, will soon celebrate one year of selling comic books, toys and collectibles.

Wanting to use remaining insurance money after his wife’s death for something fun and positive, Pickering has built a community for geeks. Not just a specialty retail store, it’s a haven for those like-minded individuals to come and spend time together. The store hosts game nights of the more popular games like Magic the Gathering, Force of Will and Yu-gi-oh!, along with nights for those interested in science fiction, book clubs and art groups.

Pickering said that although he hasn’t beaten the odds yet, he is able to pay the bills, which for a business in its first year, is an accomplishment. With the help of Thomas Chick, the only employee, along with volunteers and friends, the store’s future is promising.

Several events have been planned to celebrate the anniversary. The main event will be Thursday, Aug. 13 with games and pizza. The next day, Aug. 14, is Pickering’s birthday so he will celebrate with family and friends at the store. Then Saturday, Aug. 15, the store will host a Doctor Who event to celebrate the Doctor Who run of comics and the release of a new short-run title “Four Doctors” featuring all the doctors in one title. Prizes and fun are the order of the day.

A Galaxy Called Dallas is located at the southeast corner of Belt Line Road and North Garland Ave. at 1238 Belt Line, #365.
