Aug. 26, 2015

The Friday, Aug. 14 Breitling Youth Theater performance of “Mary Poppins” brought a large crowd into the Plaza Theater in downtown Garland. The musical is based on the stories of P.L. Travers and Walt Disney Films and the original music and lyrics are by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. The book was written by Julian Fellowes and the production was co-created by Cameron Mackintosh. New songs were created by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.

Individual patrons as well as groups from daycare centers enjoyed the production directed by Annie Breitling, founder of the theater. Almost 40 well-prepared youth, ages 3-17, participated in the show. The young actors gave an enjoyable performance which was highlighted by a fun dance number called “Step in Time.”

Every child who auditions for a role in a Breitling Youth Theater production is given a part. Some are already experienced actors, some have never acted, but they all participate.

Breitling believes that the experience the kids gain by acting in theater prodMary Poppins 2uctions helps build self-esteem and self-confidence and provides an opportunity for them to make lifelong friendships.

“Most importantly, the kids find a place where they feel they fit in,” Breitling said in a previous interview. “Some might not fit in anywhere else, but they really find a family with us and a group that they can belong to.”

Jerry Walker built the sets with the assistance of Chris Carl, Samuel Scontrino, Ryan Colgan and Will Frederick. Walker also maintains the theater’s building at 303 Main St. in downtown Garland. Alice Frederick was the wardrobe designer and Debbie Clements served as the wardrobe manager. Brittanie Scontrino and Emiliano Pliego were stage managers. John Horton was responsible for lights and Bryan Carpenter was sound manager. Brittanie Scontrino and Abbey Clements were in charge of make-up.
