The first week of high school football district play was dominated by high scoring games.
SHS-Tyler Lee combined score exceeds 100 points
The trend started Thursday, Sept. 17 with the Sachse Mustangs’ 66-41 victory over Tyler Lee High School.
Tyler Lee led at halftime, but SHS scored 35 points in the second half to get the win. Quarterback Jalen Mayden had an incredible game completing 28 of 33 pass attempts for 540 yards and six TDs.
Mayden connected with Devin Duvernay for thee of those scores on 15-, 65- and 62-yard passes. He also teamed up with Nate Shelton, Donovan Duvernay and Drue Jackson on 69-, 46- and 52-yard passes.
Devin ended the night with nine catches for 222 yards.
Mayden scored on a 5-yard run. Devin Duvernay scored on a 75-yard run.
Quarterback Alex Williams contributed to the total with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Kelon Wilson.
Geoffrey Pace added a 22-yard field goal and nine extra points.
The Mustangs put together more than 800 yards total offense.
SGHS defeated by West Mesquite
The South Garland Colonels were defeated by West Mesquite High School Thursday, Sept. 17 by a final score of 21-13.
Both SGHS scores came on passes from quarterback Kevion Grissom to Zac Scott. The first was a 25-yarder and the second was a 20-yarder.
Grissom collected 197 passing yards and Vincent Jordan rushed for 114 yards.
Kicker Eduardo Lindero was good on one PAT.
NFHS falls to GHS
Friday, Sept. 18 games also included some high scoring contests including a 57-10 Garland Owls win over the Naaman Forest Rangers.
The Rangers scored first on a 37-yard field goal by Joshua Mendoza. Then Darius Savage scored on a 9-yard run in the second.
NFHS quarterback Broderick Hampton threw for 119 yards and Savage rushed for 90.
The first score for the Owls was on an 18-yard pass from quarterback Jacoby Williams to Josh Thompson in the second quarter. Also in the second, Williams connected with Coree Compton on a 44-yard throw for a TD.
The Owls got a safety in the third quarter and followed that with a 4-yard run by Williams for a touchdown.
Later in the third, Williams threw three TD passes – an 11-yarder to Thompson, a 7-yarder to Michael Lee and a 17-yarder to Compton.
Jaylon Haskins and Felipe Zamora scored in the fourth on 3- and 27-yard runs.
Kicker Hunter Merriman added five PATs and Joshua Chavez added two.
Williams was 17-28 with 301 yards on the game. Compton had 142 yards in catches.
Raiders defeated by Rockwall HS
In another Friday night match-up, the North Garland Raiders were defeated by Rockwall High School by a score of 47-20.
Zach Duffey scored first for the Raiders on a 30-yard run in the second quarter. In the fourth, Ladaireon Rose got TDs on a 19- and 22-yard passes from quarterback Conner Dagen.
Jose Guittierez was good on two PATs.
Dagen ended the game at 7-7 with 111 yards. Duffey rushed for 109 yards.
Eagles get win over Patriots
In another high-scoring contest, the Rowlett Eagles got a 48-40 win over the Lakeview Centennial Patriots Friday, Sept. 18.
Dylan Watts scored twice for the Eagles in the first quarter 16- and 6-yard passes from quarterback Logan Bonner.
Kobe Morrow got four Eagle TDs on 58-, 1-, 66- and 10 yard rushes and LaDarius Dickens added a touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Bonner.
Bonner ended the game at 14-32 for 206 yards. Morrow rushed for 193 yards on the game.
Alvin Kenworthy was good on five PATs and Chris Liplow added one extra point.
Kaleb McNac put together 124 rushing yards on the game and scored twice for the Patriots on 58- and 6-yard runs.
Jamil Linwood also got two scores for LCHS on short runs.
Quarterback Kamron Fields connected with Shamond Greenwood on an 11-yard TD pass and Fields, who ran for 133 yards on the game, scored on a short rush.
John Guerra was good on four PATs.
