Thinking pink for breast cancer awareness month, Sam Houston Middle School hosted a fun run to raise money for the Cancer Support Community of North Texas.
“We have raised money in previous years but wanted to give students the opportunity to participate in an event this year,” said Principal Don Hernandez. “Assistant principals Amanda Ramos and Jocelyn Charbonneau came up with the slogan of ‘Sam Houston–Making a Difference’ and partnered with the PTA to make it happen.”
Spreading the word through morning announcements and callouts home, the campus invited students, staff, parents and community members. Participants all donated $5, and a total of $2,100 was raised.
“We had an overwhelming response from our students and teachers,” commented Hernandez. “Prestige Ford also donated water and sent representatives to participate. Even the Garland Police Department took part in the festivities. This event far exceeded my expectations.”
With Sam Houston’s first-ever fun run in the books as a success, the campus plans to continue it as a yearly tradition.
