In today’s technological society, teaching children how to stay safe online has become a focus for Garland ISD. The district celebrated its second-annual Cybersafety Week this fall.
“Our theme was Stop. Think. Post,” explained Coordinator of Technology Applications Jasna Aliefendic. “Anything you say, post or view can potentially be seen by family, friends, teachers, coaches, neighbors and even strangers.”
Teaching students that once something is out there, it cannot be taken back, Cybersafety Week promoted increasing privacy settings, respecting others and obeying copyright laws. Teachers incorporated many engaging activities into lessons and school libraries held poster contests. Campus winners were then submitted for districtwide judging. Walnut Glen Academy for Excellence fifth-grader Victor Akanno received the grand prize: a video camera.
“You should never give your personal information on random surveys, links with viruses or websites you do not trust. But if you do, ask your parent for permission first,” mentioned his poster.
Although the celebration has ended, GISD’s cybersafety education will continue all year long. Parents will also have opportunities to learn tips to help protect their children. The district is partnering with Dallas Child Advocacy Center to host several workshops this spring. View a list of dates on the Family and Community Engagement website.
