Did you know the average three-credit hour class at a four-year Texas public university costs $1,500? Garland ISD offers several opportunities to start saving money during high school. In addition to dual credit classes, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate can also reduce the number of college courses needed.
Beginning this spring, the district will pay for all AP and IB exams.
“Fees can range from $17-120,” said Advanced Academics Administrator Kristyn Edney. “This may not be affordable. We are excited to give every student the chance to both save money now and in college.”
After evaluating fees from 2014-15, GISD’s Board of Trustees approved more than $360,000 at a December board meeting. There are no restrictions for taking advantage of this free opportunity. Simply register for AP tests via campus websites before March 18. IB students who have already registered should contact Rebecca Tisdale for a refund.
Of the 5,956 AP exams taken last year, nearly 40 percent yielded a three or higher, which can be exchanged for college credit.
“For the past couple years, we have focused on increasing our participation and passing rates,” Edney said. “Student success can be credited to our amazing AP teachers, as well as several campus and district initiatives.”
