On March 8, shortly after 9 a.m., Garland police and fire departments responded to the report of an injury and damage caused by strong winds that accompanied the severe storms that hit much of north Texas. The damage occurred at three separate businesses in the 2600 block of Industrial Lane.
Officials believe high winds damaged the roof of one business, carrying portions of the roof through the air, and landing on a white van that had just pulled onto the roadway. The driver of the van, 55-year-old J. Santos Torres of Dallas, sustained serious injuries and was transported the hospital. He is still in critical condition.
Two other businesses reported roof damage in the same area; however, there were no other injuries reported. Several unoccupied vehicles that were parked in the area also sustained damages from flying debris.
Power lines were also reported down in the residential area east of Industrial Lane. Garland Power &Light and Oncor crews are currently working to restore power.
