Two Boy Scouts from Garland, David Martinez, Jr. and Adrian Garcia, along with Jose Luis Serna of Mesquite, received their Eagle Scout recognition at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Casa Linda area Saturday, March 12. The event was historic as these three Hispanic youth were the first to reach the Eagle Scout level at this church.
There were 21 boys in attendance from troop 369 along with their parents, families and friends and the remaining Hispanic boys from the troop were challenged to follow in the footsteps of the three newly recognized Eagle Scouts.
The significance of reaching this rank, according to http://www.nesa.org/trail.html, is as follows: “The fact that a boy is an Eagle Scout has always carried with it a special significance, not only in Scouting but also as he enters higher education, business or industry, and community service. The award is a performance-based achievement whose standards have been well-maintained over the years. Not 
every boy who joins a Boy Scout troop earns the Eagle Scout rank; only about 5 percent of all Boy Scouts do so. This represents more than 2 million Boy Scouts who have earned the rank since 1912. Nevertheless, the goals of Scouting—citizenship training, character development and personal fitness—remain important for all Scouts, whether or not they attain the Eagle Scout rank.”
To earn the rank, there are requirements that must be fulfilled in the areas of leadership, service and outdoor skills. There are many options through which a Boy Scout can demonstrate proficiency in these areas, however, a number of specific skills are required to advance through the ranks—Scout rank, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle. Boy Scouts must pass specific tests that are organized by requirements and merit badges to advance in rank.
