The Garland Symphony Orchestra continues “Symphonic Treasures!” April 15 and the concert features the GSO’s own concertmaster, Delmar Pettys performing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto.
As our season continues, the Garland Symphony Orchestra will explore masterpieces inspired by visions of riches. From Turina’s Danzas Fantásticas to Lehar’s Gold and Silver Waltz, it promises to be a glittering array of musical treasures. Along the way, the GSO’s 93 musicians will provide music from Shostakovich’s Suite from The Age of Gold, Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto, and more symphonic gems.
Delmar Pettys has brought expertise, knowledge and musical leadership since joining GSO in 2014. He is a respected icon in the area and recognized for his position as Principal Second Violin of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra from 1986-2009.
He earned degrees from Juilliard School in New York, where he studied with Oscar Shumsky and Joseph Fuchs, and had chamber music training with the Juilliard String Quartet. Upon graduation, he joined the Lenox String Quartet for 10 years, participating in college residencies, tours and recordings. Other chamber music experiences include being founder of the Evansville Chamber Orchestra, Artistic Director of the Evansville Chamber Players, and member of The Chicago Ensemble.
Previous orchestral experience included the Casals Festival Orchestra (1965), Concertmaster of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra-Indiana (1977-1986), acting Associate Concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony (1976-1977) and acting concertmaster of the Dallas Opera (2009-2010). He was a charter member, concertmaster, and frequent soloist with the Music in the Mountains Festival in Durango, Colorado. He was Concertmaster of the Eugene Oregon Opera from 2012-2014. Delmar has also held numerous teaching positions.
GSO will also feature Shostakovich’s Suite from The Age of Gold, and Turina’s Danzas Fantásticas.
Joan Pàmies join GSO as guest conductor. He began his musical studies in Valladolid, where he was born. He continued them in Barcelona, Brussels, Stuttgart and Madrid. He has been a professor at the Spanish National Orchestra in Madrid and, for 15 years, professor at the Municipal Superior Music Conservatory in Barcelona.
Joan Pàmies has helped with young players´ education by conducting young orchestras in European countries. In 1986, he founded the Orquestra de Cambra Catalana and they have performed in more than 500 concerts in Spain, Europe, South America, North Africa and Asia. First performances of scores by contemporary composers have been given by Joan Pàmies and the OCC. Their repertoire also includes international composers from the past.
GSO credits Music Director Robert Carter Austin for its outstanding orchestral programming. His background spans over 30 years of professional music experience and includes degrees from MIT, Cambridge University, and Stanford University. Austin’s musical experience includes conducting performances in: Korea, Ukraine, Canada, Italy, Spain, China, France, Germany, Mexico, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Colombia, Philippines, Guatemala, Dominican Republic and the United States.
