On July 2, shortly after 3 p.m., the Garland Police Department responded to a Domestic Disturbance in the area of Centerville Road and Broadway Boulevard. The female caller advised that she was being followed by her ex-boyfriend who had threatened to kill her and was driving a black Chevrolet passenger vehicle.
The responding officers located the suspect car on Centerville near LBJ Freeway and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle did not stop and lead officers in a chase. During the chase someone from inside the car began shooting at the pursuing officers.
The driver of the suspect car attempted to flee from officers westbound on LBJ Freeway, at high speeds, through Dallas, Farmers Branch, Irving and Coppell. A person from inside the suspect vehicle continued shooting at officers numerous times throughout the chase.
While attempting to stop the car Garland officers utilized the Precision Immobilization Technique. This caused the suspect car to veer off the roadway into a parking lot where it ultimately came to a stop. Once stopped a female passenger exited the vehicle and attempted to flee from officers. Garland officers pursued the female on foot and she was arrested.
A male subject was still inside the vehicle and would not respond to any commands given by the officers on scene. A SWAT team was utilized to assist. Upon contact with the male subject it was determined that he died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The male subject has been identified as 32-year-old Alfredo Vargas Patino of Dallas.
The investigation revealed that Patino had a warrant for a Family Violence related offense. The female passenger who had been arrested was released after further investigation. She was identified as 28-year-old Vanessa Barron of Dallas.
No shots were fired by officers.
