GHS math/science team excels

The Garland High School math/science team traveled to Lubbock July 12 to attend the seventh Texas Tech Summer Math/Science Camp and compete at the July 16 contest.  Led by two outstanding seniors, Linh Nguyen and Andrew Doan, Garland High School won its fourth straight summer camp contest.

Approximately 40 schools and 200 students participated in the competition.  Students attended 18 classes from Wednesday through Friday and then competed Saturday.  It was the most difficult and competitive contest Texas Tech has had in its seven years of existence.

Competing against Lubbock High School, Garland High School placed first in Number Sense (922 to 722), first in Calculator (665 to 616), second in Math (574 to 586), second in Science (532 to 704) and first in Sweepstakes (2693 to 2630).

Top scorers in number sense were Linh Nguyen (337), Andrew Doan (319), Zachary Nguyen (266), Tien Tran (255), and Norman Chung (229).

Top scorers in calculator were Linh Nguyen (246), Andrew Doan (241), Zachary Nguyen (178), Norman Chung (162), and Luz Martinez (150).

Top scorers in math were Linh Nguyen (212), Andrew Doan (198), Norman Chung (164), Zachary Nguyen (154), and Tien Tran (150).

Top scorers in science were Andrew Doan (184), Linh Nguyen (180), Tien Tran (168), Zachary Nguyen (128), and Brian Tran (114).

Other team members were Joshua Robert, Brandon Pham, Doan-Viet Nguyen. Gia-Uyen Nguyen, and Alina Tieu.

Individually the team won 33 medals and ribbons. It was composed of eight high school students and four students from Austin Academy Middle School that represented Garland High School in the ninth-grade division.

Dr. John Hobbs, the math/science team’s head coach, as well as Ms. Jordan Marlar the assistant head coach, are extremely proud of the team and its accomplishments. The team is grateful to Dr. Edney who helped make this trip and experience possible.
