The Urban Flea Market, presented by Resurrected Designs, continues to offer a great group of vendors with a variety of merchandise. The Saturday, Oct. 8, market was no exception. The vendors’ offerings were varied and a number of the attendees took advantage of the shopping experience.
Shop owner Emily Low attributes the success of the Urban Flea to the quality of the vendors.
“There are other shows where they could make more money, but I think they like what we are doing,” she said.
Dina Moon, designer and colleague of Low, agrees that all the vendors are exceptional.
“The show is juried and we have a group of peer store owners that help us out with that. We really wanted to narrow the Urban Flea and make it a little more significant by choosing genuine artisans,” said Moon.
Low said that she was shocked when Resurrected Designs recently received this year’s “Best Gift Shop” designation by the Dallas Observer. As one of the most popular destinations in downtown Garland, the store has brought many first-time visitors to the area. Resurrected Designs, as well as three other downtown Garland businesses, Intrinsic Brewery and Smokehouse, Boogie Nights and the Generator, were nominated in other categories. She said that it was great to be nominated along with other downtown establishments.
The atmosphere of the store is relaxed and friendly and visitors stop in not just to shop, but to visit as well. One of the most important attributes, along with the uniqueness and quality of the merchandise, is that there is lots of laughter. It’s “just plain fun.”
“I really believe in what we do and where we do it and I appreciate the support we get from neighboring businesses, the people that come by and the city of Garland and city council people,” Low said. “It’s like an echo, it goes out and it always seems to wind up coming back. It’s a grass roots movement, very organic.”
Moon believes that the success of the store and market comes from having a dream for so long and thinking it through to fruition a million times, then when it happens, you will be the reason that people come in and the reason they come back.
“Emily and I both like to talk a lot,” she said. “We’re just long-winded, family oriented, spin a good yarn and love people.”
There is only one more daytime Urban Flea this year, Saturday, Nov. 12. It will resume in May 2017. A night-time Urban Flea will be held during the city of Garland’s Christmas on the Square event Dec. 1. In addition to selecting the vendors for the Dec. 1 Urban Flea, Low and Moon will choose the vendors that have booths at the city event.
Resurrected Designs is located at 700 Main Street in downtown Garland. The Urban Flea is held on Seventh Street beside the shop. For more information, visit www.resurrecteddesigns.com.
