Sachse Mustangs remain unbeaten

The showdown between District 10-6A’s two undefeated teams Friday, Oct. 21 at Homer B. Johnson Stadium was an exciting one. The Sachse Mustangs (8-0, 4-0) went up against the Rowlett Eagles (7-1, 3-1) and came out on top with a final score of 33-7.

In addition to being longstanding rivals, one of the teams was going home with a loss on its record. SHS Head Coach Mark ‘Red’ Behrens said that he was sure his team had a “little extra in their step” because Rowlett was the opponent. He added, though, that they treat every game the same.

“I tell them it’s the biggest game of the year because it’s the next one,” Behrens said.

This is not the first time the Mustangs have been the sole unbeaten team in the district late in the season.

“We have been in this position before. We continue to get better every season,” Behrens said. “I am proud of our school, administration and coaches but most of all our players who bust their tails every week to improve.”mustangs

The first quarter was all Mustangs as Drue Jackson scored on a 78-yard pass from quarterback Jalen Mayden and less than two minutes later Mayden took the ball into the end zone on a 7-yard run. This brought the score to 13-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Mustangs scored again in the second quarter when Nate Shelton caught a 17-yard Mayden pass.

The Eagles got their only scored in the second quarter when quarterback Preston Weeks took the ball in on a 1-yard run. The score at halftime was 20-7.

Christian Cole scored twice in the third quarter on 75- and 1-yard runs bringing the score to 33-7 where it stayed until the end of the game.

The Mustang’s offense put together 395 yards on the game, 135 in the air and 260 on the ground. Cole carried the ball 14 times for 139 yards and Drue Jackson caught three passes for 90 yards.

The coaches’ pick for offensive MVP was Mayden. The offensive lineman of the week was Hayden Park who they said “led the offensive line with effort and intensity.”

The SHS defense was effective throughout the game holding the Eagles to 189 total yards and getting the ball to the offense on three interceptions, two by Isaiah Humphries and one by Chris Washington. The coaches named two defensive MVPs. Riko Jeffers, who had two nfhs-sghs-football-slideshowtackles and 11 assists, and Humphries with two tackles, five assists and two interceptions.

“It was a great performance by our defense,” said Behrens. “Rowlett has an outstanding offense, but our defense rose to the occasion.”

Rowlett’s quarterback Preston Weeks ended the night at 16-29 for 123 yards but their offense never quite got going against the SHS defense.

Rangers defeat Colonels

The Naaman Forest Rangers (5-3, 3-1) got a 27-0 win over the South Garland Colonels Thursday, Oct. 20 at Garland’s Williams Stadium. The Colonels have not gotten a win yet this season.

The Rangers’ Ty-Reek James scored on a 59-yard run early in the game. Broderick Hampton got a touchdown in the second quarter on a 1-yard run to bring the halftime score to 13-0.

Is’aiah Coffer-Jones scored on a 7-yard run in the third quarter and DJ White scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter to bring the score to 27-0.

The Rangers collected 395 total yards on the game, all on the ground. James carried the ball eight times for 108 yards and Coffer-Jones had 11 carries for 77 yards.

Jaylin Sidney carried the ball 20 times for 105 yards for the Colonels.
