Sachse High School senior Meaghan Jones recently signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at South Alabama University. The signing ceremony was in the gym at Sachse High School.
Meaghan started playing volleyball when she was in 7th grade because all her friends were playing.
“My intentions were not to get a scholarship, but just to have fun,” she said. “After enjoying a long season of volleyball I fell in love with the sport.”
Meaghan made the B team her first year and landed a spot on the A team in 8th grade after taking private lessons from Coach Tyrone Jenkins. She went on to be the only freshman to play on the varsity team the next year.
“It wasn’t an easy thing to accomplish,” Meaghan said. “Even though there were times when I was too tired to go to practice or had too much homework, I never gave up or took the easy way out.”
The student athlete was ecstatic when she learned that the South Alabama coach was noticing her volleyball talent when she was 15 years old.
“I was greatly surprised and excited to receive scholarship the offer,” Meaghan said.
She plans to study professional health sciences, attend medical school and eventually be an orthopedic doctor/surgeon.
Meaghan is grateful for the scholarship and acknowledged that female athletes are earning more and more scholarships. She is certain that the number will continue to grow in the future.
“College is costly and being athletic is a God given gift,” she said. “Therefore, we female athletes need to take full advantage of having it paid for.”
Meaghan added that if she can earn a scholarship, other dedicated young female athletes can too.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to be one of the few to receive an athletic scholarship and it is well worth it,” she said.
Meaghan also runs varsity track at SHS and participates in club volleyball. She enjoys taking care of her dog, shopping, seeing movies, swimming, fishing, board games and video games.
