Texans Can Academy students receive immunizations

Jan. 9, 2019

Care Vans recently visited the Texans Can Academy – Garland campus to offer free immunizations to 80 high school students. The health care professionals will also provide free health screenings such as blood pressure checks, body fat and strength tests while they are at the schools.

The Care Van Program provides immunizations to uninsured and medically underserved children through its current fleet of 10 specially customized vans. Providing non-traditional services, the program is able to complement traditional clinics by visiting schools and other organizations in the communities where at-risk families live and work. The program is coordinated through the Caring for Children Foundation of Texas, Inc., and with thanks to lead sponsor Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.

Immunizing children is one of the most direct, simple and least expensive ways to build healthier futures for families in Texas. Students in need of immunizations will be able to receive the medical help they need to keep them healthy throughout the school year. Students who have less of a risk to disease and illness will be able to participate and attend school more regularly.

The program visits multiple Texans Can Academy campuses throughout the school year to provide services to high school students. The schools uphold the mission of taking care of the whole student by offering rich academics along with resources needed outside the classroom like health, dental, eye care, school supplies and clothing, allowing every student to attain an education without any barriers. Today, Texans Can has 14 campuses located in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio and has impacted the lives of over 151,000 students.
