Jan. 25 at approximately 11 p.m., Garland Police Department officers responded to a concern for welfare in the 800 block of West Centerville Road. The caller, who was later identified as 48-year-old Russ Allen McClellan, stated that he wanted to kill himself. McClellan, who was parked in a white pickup in front of the Dollar General, said that he had a gun.
Responding officers arrived and located McClellan sitting in the driver’s side of his vehicle.
As the officers were trying to communicate with McClellan, he grabbed his gun and pointed the weapon at the officers.
Two officers, a six-year and an eight-year veteran, fired their duty rifles and struck McClellan who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
GPD homicide detectives responded to the scene to investigate according to standard procedures.
The GPD officers will be placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy.
