The Nicholson Memorial Library System has announced its schedule of activities of March.
Kids get lost in space – Children 6-12 can learn STEAM concepts while exploring outer space at the Nicholson Memorial Library System’s Books and Beyond program. The event is at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Central Library. Books and Beyond consists of book discussions and activities related to monthly themes. Each theme incorporates concepts from STEAM learning: science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Attendees participate in four space-related activities: building a shelter out of Lego® bricks, making necklaces with beads representing the eight planets of the solar system, learning about phases of the moon using Oreo® cookies and creating constellation drawings using stickers and pencils. Paper crafting for adults – Adults can learn iris folding, a paper craft using layered, folded strips of paper at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at the South Garland Branch. Each workshop features a unique craft project or art piece. Supplies are provided by library. Registration is required and is limited to 24 participants. Garland police officer teaches preschoolers about community helpers – Preschoolers ages 3-5 can learn about community helpers and meet a real Garland police officer at the North Garland Branch Preschool Storytime—Friday, March 15 at 11 a.m. Children will learn about what police officers do and how they help people. The officer will read a book to the kids, then give them a tour of a patrol car. They will also make their own police caps. 972-205-2804.
Trivia Night—Harry Potter Style – Tweens and teens 10-17 can take part in a Harry Potter-themed trivia night at the Central Library Tuesday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m. Participants can sign up in teams of two to four beginning Tuesday, Feb. 26. Each team member must be 10 or older. Trivia will be presented in style of the game show Jeopardy®. The team with the most “money” at the end of the night will be declared the winner, and each member of the winning team will receive a prize. 972-205-2517.
Garland libraries Host Perot Museum Tech Truck – Tweens and teens can celebrate Teen Tech Week with visits from the Perot Museum’s Tech Truck. The Tech Truck is a mobile extension of the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. It is outfitted with technological gadgets and equipment like 3-D printers and laser cutters. The Tech Truck offers attendees creative, scientific and maker-based activities. The truck will visit the South Garland Branch March 7, at 6:30 p.m. and North Garland Branch March 14, at 6:30 p.m. Free event. Registration is required and limited to 30 participants. Class Act Tap Company at Senior Social Hour – The Class Act Tap dancers will tap their way into the NMLS Senior Social Hour Thursday, March 21, at 2 p.m. at Central Library. The dancers are part of The Class Act Tap Company, an organization of 40 women over age 50. The company members provide shows free of charge and have performed at conventions, civic and charity events, corporate and military functions, and are well known on the Dallas senior entertainment circuit. Routines are set to a variety of musical styles. Sponsored by Friends of the Library, Senior Social Hour programs are free and open to anyone 55+. Donations of gently used books and media for book sale are accepted. Registration not required, but seats fill up quickly. Doors open 30 minutes before performance. Kids participate in National Craft Month – Children and families can spend an afternoon doing crafts together in honor of National Craft Month at South Garland Branch Thursday, March 14 from 2-4 p.m. Craft materials will be available for participants to use in any project they can imagine. 972-205-3933.
Kindness Rocks – Children of all ages and families may participate in the Kindness Rocks Project at the North Garland Branch this Spring Break. Kindness Rocks promotes random acts of kindness by encouraging participants to decorate rocks with positive sayings and then leave the rocks in random spots for people to find. The Kindness Rocks maker event is at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 at North Garland Branch. Attendees will use oil-based paint markers to decorate rocks with positive sayings and images. Finished rocks may be taken at the end of the event to be left in a place of the participant’s choosing. 972-205-2804.
Families enjoy free movie – Bring a blanket and attend a free movie with your family. Walnut Creek Branch is showing The Boss Baby at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 15. In Boss Baby, 7-year-old Tim Templeton has a great life until the unexpected arrival of his new brother, the Boss Baby. Movie is rated PG. Doors open 15 minutes before event. Seating is limited. Teens Face Off on Mario Kart – Teen gamers 13-18 are invited to compete against each other in a Mario Kart tournament at South Garland Branch Library at 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, March 16. Interested teens will sign in at the South Garland Branch and be placed into the tournament bracket. Play will continue until only four players are left. Remaining players will face off in final race, with this race’s winner being declared the overall victor and prize winner. 972-205-3931.
Kids Watercolor – Children ages 6-12 will discover warm and cool colors and use them in a watercolor painting at Art Explorers at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Walnut Creek Branch. Children will learn about different types of art, then develop STEAM art skills by creating masterpieces. Attendees will learn about warm colors and cool colors.
