‘The Foreigner’ comes to Granville Arts Center

Mar. 3, 2019

Garland Civic Theatre’s next production, “The Foreigner,” will run March 7-24.

While vacationing in Georgia, a very shy British man hopes to avoid the locals by pretending to be an exotic foreigner who can’t speak English. However, he uncovers something scandalous while in disguise in this hilarious comedy by Larry Shue.

The play opened off-Broadway Nov. 1, 1984 at New York City’s Astor Place Theatre and ran for 686 performances. It won two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production. Larry Shue died in a plane crash the following year, not living to see the continued popularity of The Foreigner.

Tickets are available at GarlandArtsBoxOffice.com, by calling 972-205-2790 or in-person at the Granville Arts Center Box Office, open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and two hours before each performance.

Preview show is Thursday, March 7 at 7:30. Remaining performances are Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. The Granville Arts Center is at 300 North Fifth Street in downtown Garland.

Philip Brandes said in a 1993 review of the play for the Los Angeles Times:

“One reason Larry Shue’s “The Foreigner” is so frequently performed is because it’s one of the few modern comedies that remains true to human nature despite its absurd excesses. Another reason is that it’s outrageously funny.”

Another review called the play “outrageously funny.”
