The Nicholson Memorial Library System has announced its May activities schedule. There are fun things for all ages!
Kids practice perspective drawing – Children 6-12 learn perspective drawing techniques at Art Explorers event at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Walnut Creek Branch. Attendees will complete a step by step art piece by first sketching shapes on a page then adding “vanishing point” lines to make the shapes three dimensional. Participants will then draw curlicue lines through the shapes to connect the elements in the drawing. Artists may add color to their pieces as final step. Registration required and limited to 24. Adults learn about beekeeping – Learn about beekeeping from a professional beekeeper at the South Garland Branch Saturday, May 18, at 2:30 p.m. Staff of Collin County Beekeeper Association will give presentation, answer questions and provide a contained observation hive of live honey bees. Attendees can view a bee suit and other protective garments and receive brochures with recipes and beekeeping information. Individuals with allergies to bees should be mindful that live honey bees will be present. 972-205-3933.
Adults make paper wreaths – Adults can turn recycled book pages and scrapbook pages into feathered paper wreaths. Workshop is at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25 at South Garland Branch. Each workshop features a unique project. Supplies provided by library. Registration required and limited to 24. Registration begins Saturday, May 11. 972-205-3931. Event open to ages 18+.
Workshops for creative kids – Chldren, 7-12 have opportunity to become creative kids at South Garland Branch. Program features a different class each Tuesday, June 4 – July 23 from 7 to 8 p.m. Children will learn a new creative skill and practice with hands-on activities.
June 4 My Space Diary
Create your own diary like Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Each diary will contain interactive prompts for writing, coloring and drawing.
June 11 Rover Races
Learn about rovers like those used on Mars, then make a model rover out of food items like Twizzlers, frosting, marshmallows, peppermints and Kit-Kat bars.
June 18 Pocket-Sized Solar System
Discover elements that make up solar system and create version using stickers.
June 25 Jedi Training
Experience Jedi training by completing Star Wars-themed activities such as making Leia hair buns or Yoda ears, building droids, practicing with lightsabers and flying paper airplanes through a Death Star trench.
July 2 Create Your Own Planet
Design and build your own planet using Play Doh and styrofoam.
July 9 Space Landing Mission
Help friendly aliens land on Earth by constructing shock-absorbing landers using paper, index cards, straws and marshmallows.
July 16 Build Your Own Moon Habitat
Celebrate 50th anniversary of moon landing by making miniature moon habitat.
July 23 Space Suncatchers
Create a space-themed suncatcher using stained-glass paint and plastic plates.

Children make necklaces for Mother’s Day – Children ages 6+ can make necklaces for Mother’s Day at Central Library. Participants can drop in from 2 – 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4, and use the provided craft materials while supplies last. Crafters will wrap paperclips with decorative paper using glue and glitter glue, then hook the paperclips together to form the necklaces. Due to construction, locations could change. Marlene Bradford presents information on severe weather – Texas residents know spring means severe weather. Author Marlene Bradford will share information about severe weather, weather forecasting and history of tornadoes at Senior Social Hour. Event is at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 16, at Central Library. Bradford is a graduate of Tennessee’s Union University and holds a master’s degree in history from Texas State University, as well as a Ph.D. in U.S. history from Texas A&M University. She is the author of Texas Tornadoes: The Lone Star State’s Deadliest Twisters and Arkansas Tornadoes: The Natural State’s Deadliest Twisters.
Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Senior Social Hour programs are free and open to anyone 55+. Registration not required, but seats fill quickly. Doors open 30 minutes before performance.
