Garland earns statewide communications awards

Jun. 20, 2019

The city of Garland was recognized for excellence in communications, as it earned six awards at the 2019 Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers Conference in early June.

The Garland City Press brought home a TAMI Award in the External Newsletter category. The city’s bi-monthly newsletter provides residents with important information about city news, activities, events and programs. The judges were impressed by the new colorful design, saying it gives the publication a contemporary, energetic vibe. The updated design uses design elements from the new Make Your Mark marketing campaign.

Garland also earned a TAMI Award in the Video-PSA Educational category for Park Closed. When the city decided to close Windsurf Bay Park for a holiday in 2018, we produced a video to help get the word out in advance. The judges complimented Garland for using humor to lessen the blow of temporarily closing the popular venue. This video also earned the Award of Excellence in the Best Use of Humor category.

Another Garland video, Parks & Rec Planning Promo, brought home the Award of Excellence in the PSA Marketing category. This video invited the public to get involved in the parks master plan process.

Garland Power & Light’s 2017 Annual Report earned an Award of Excellence in the Print-Report category. This report shares important financial information and highlights key accomplishments.

The utility’s response to a major outage in 2018 earned an Award of Honor in the category Best Use of Social Media (Unplanned). The judges praised the city’s coordinated use of various social media channels as a model for others to follow.

The TAMI Awards is the leading recognition program in Texas honoring excellence for municipal communication strategies. TAMIO is an affiliate of the Texas Municipal League, which represents approximately 98 percent of Texas’ urban population through its more than 1,000 member cities and towns.
