The Garland Fire Department is recruiting candidates interested in a career as a firefighter. Online applications will be accepted through 5 p.m. Monday, July 29. Requirements include:
- At least 18 years of age, but not more than 36 years of age at time of examination
- High school graduate or GED
- Ability to complete physical agility testing
- Ability to pass pre-employment screening, including background and drug screening
- Possess a valid Class C Texas driver’s license and ability to obtain Class B after employment
After completion of on-the-job training, have ability to perform these essential job functions:
- Perform fire suppression and other rescue operations
- Search for and/or rescue trapped or injured persons
- Assist in implementing continuous fire prevention activities
- Respond to medical services calls
- Administer first aid and emergency medical services to sick or injured persons to level authorized by Paramedic certification
- Perform various administrative duties
- May participate on department committees and attend staff meetings
- Participate in routine housekeeping and preventative maintenance
GFD Chief Mark Lee shared in a public letter, “I have the opportunity to work with some of the finest firefighters and paramedics I’ve ever met.”

Whether it’s fighting fires in someone’s home or business, answering emergency medical and traumatic injury calls or being a role model for local kids by playing games with them throughout the city, we are there. When a person calls 911, we respond. Our goal is to make a bad situation better.”
He added that without awesome people, and support from the community, the GFD would not be able to reach that goal.
