Saatchi Art’s The Other Art Fair (“The Fair”), a leading international art fair championing emerging and independent artists, introduces its first Dallas edition Sept. 19-22 at Dallas Market Hall. The Other Art Fair will bring together 120 local and international emerging artists, showcasing a variety of original and limited edition works in a non-intimidating and inspiring environment.
The artists showcased at The Fair are selected by a panel of influential art experts to ensure visitors have access to the most promising and talented emerging artists and Garland artist Alexandra Hulsey will be featured in the show.
Hulsey lived in Garland but attended Booker T. Washington High School for Performing and Visual Arts. She lived close to Garland High School, though, and said that she often attended their performances, football games and dances. She also got to know the great faculty members that taught IB Art at GHS and has met some really talented artists that came from the GHS program.
Hulsey grew up around artists, musicians and cooks and said that she understood creativity early. She focuse
d on music initially, then later realized that she was more interested in photography and visual art.
She was intrigued by the mechanics of film cameras early on and received a Polaroid camera when she was 9-years-old.
“I used it to make editorial shots of anyone willing to let me style and post them, eventually becoming obsessed with archiving physical copies of my memories,” Hulsey said. “Photography is also infatuating to me on a philosophical level. The ideas of flatting three-dimensional space, using illusions by framing the environment, holding time still and accountable, the option of altering reality… I could go on! These are all ideas that inspire me to make art and why I often utilize photography to describe them.”
Hulsey describes her art as conceptually based and said that it will always withhold a sort of meaning or investigation. Presentation is also important, but first and foremost, she focuses on the message.
She described the journey that led to her participation in The Other Art Fair as “enlightening.”
“After receiving
my BFA, I found myself neglecting fine-art and being blinded by the false promises of obtaining a more corporate role. After 2 years, the outcome left me face to face with rejection and re-evaluation,” she said. “I then decided that if I want to achieve something, the best way to do that is to put all this energy and hard work I was outputting for others, towards myself, hence my art.”
She took the opportunity to show in the fair as a personal challenge and created a new 16-piece series in two months after a three-year hiatus.
“It was difficult, but now I’m proud to say that I made something positive because of a situation that left me feeling so distraught,” Hulsey said. I’ll never neglect my creativity and personal goals again! I hope that sharing this experience can be motivating and relevant for anyone, artist or not.”
