Nineteen teachers from eight different Harmony Public Schools campuses across Greater DFW are working together — but separately — to help provide desperately-needed medical supplies for health care workers in their community
Working from home during their off-hours from helping Harmony students with distance learning, the teachers are using 3D printers to build medical-grade face shield for health care workers across Tarrant County.
The printers are either those personally owned by the teachers, or on loan from Harmony Public Schools. The school system is implementing similar 3D-printed face shield program at its campuses across the state.
As of Tuesday, the group of DFW teachers had produced more than 200 face shields to donate to the Tarrant County Health Department. They now are working to making at least another 300.
The teachers serve students ranging from PreK to Grade 12 and represent the following DFW-area Harmony schools:
- Harmony Science Academy (Middle)-Dallas(Grades 6-8)
- Harmony Science Academy (High)-Dallas(Grades 9-12)
- Harmony School of Excellence-Dallas(Grades 6-12)
- Harmony Science Academy-Carrollton(Grades 6-12)
- Harmony Science Academy-Euless(Grades 7-12)
- Harmony School of Innovation-Grand Prairie(Grades PreK-5)
- Harmony School of Innovation-Garland (Grades 7-12)
- Harmony School of Innovation-Euless(Grades K-6)
Each face shield costs roughly about $1 in materials to produce.
To help complete the project, the teachers are asking the public for a donation of either materials or funds to purchase them. Specifically, the teachers are in need of transparent PTEG plastic sheets (.002 or .003 thickness) which are used for shield part of the masks.
Harmony Public Schools is a statewide system of free, PreK-12 college-preparatory charter schools focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and Character Education.
